a space for students to detach, unwind and belong
Avon High School
phase one — cafeteria
Our aim here was to create a warm, inviting experience — one that encourages students to pause from the hustle and bustle of the school day, and feel as though they can truly detach, unwind and belong while they savor a meal and commune with one another.
To help accomplish this, we designed the space to have its own identity, the Nest — playing off the school’s mascot, the oriole, and kept school branding and messaging minimal. Everything we included is meant to foster a sense of belonging, be it the copy in multiple languages and diversity of typefaces along the main bulkhead, the warm solid oak accents and trees surrounding the columns, or the bird & nest icon that welcomes students into the serving area.
Flexibility was also a key factor we were mindful of. The playful station concept names can be easily swapped out as the menu changes, as well as the graphics along the south end (soon to be installed).
Our scope also includes a grab-and-go area called The Market, as well as two separate café spaces, The Perch and The Canopy.
This project was completed in partnership with Performance Services, Reitano Design Group & The Exhibit House.
